Q: Cereal for a diet??help?
so im 13 years old and im on a diet. for breakfeast i usually make egss but sometimes it gets to hard to get up before school and not make much noise so the family doesnt wake up. i need a healthy cereal. i used to eat specialk berry cereal and i stopeed becuase of the sugar. then i ate speical k protien plus,(has less sugar). but i checkes the nutrition facts on cheerios and theres little sugar. is that batter then the special k cereal in diet wise?

A: Special K, and try to get skim or low fat milk.
Kashi is also pretty good, but it’s expensive.

I am doing a project for school and need to know a few things about food boxes, not only cereal. In 1850 did they have color in the pictures on the front of the box? If so how much color? Did they have the nutrition facts that we have today? If you could show me where you get your info that would be great!! I need quick answers because the project is due soon, Tuesday. A: I don’t believe they used boxes – paper bags (flour sacks etc) – ok
they did not have the types of prepared cereals we have today
as I remember ☺ we only had the grains – oats being the best for breakfast but wheat – barley etc
there were only feed markets to buy bulk foods -
I never lived in the city back then☺ – - I have this picture in my head of going to market with dad ☺- – there was a farmers market where mom was let off to get the flour salt rice potatoes etc and other food stuff – Dad and I to the Mercantile – where we got the feed for the animals and tools – mom met up with us there to get material for clothes and other girlie project things

I believe it was the 60’s – 70’s the radical food nutritionist manage to pass the laws on nutritional labels ( – ( – I saw it as insane – - mom and I ate about the same foods – she had sedentary work schedule – I had to walk behind a horse sun up – sun down
there were NO calorie counters – - you ate your fill – mom took care of any balance of nutrition – meat – starch – veggies – sweets -
we have been doing this 4.2 billion years – - Sorry I still do not know my daily requirements

Q: Kellogg’s Special K Cereal?
I love Special K Vanilla Almond and Fruit & Yogurt Cereal!
Well today I went to the grocery store and they had Special K 2 for $7 and so at first I got Vanilla Almond and Fruit & Yogurt of course, but then I saw that they had the New Cinnamon Pecan Flavor and I have not tried it yet so I compared the nutrition facts with Cinnamon Pecan to Fruit & Yogurt to see if I wanted to change my mind and I noticed that Fruit & Yogurt has SATURATED FATS! So I took the Fruit & Yogurt out of my shopping cart and I ended up choosing Vanilla Almond (my favorite) and Cinnamon Pecan.

When I got back to my apartment I had a bowl of the new Cinnamon Pecan cereal and it tasted OK not as good as Vanilla Almond and Fruit & Yogurt but it was pretty good.

But I will no longer be buying Fruit & Yogurt because it has Saturated Fats in it and that is a big NO NO for me.

I also found out that Special K cereals use high fructose corn syrup in their cereals and I really hate that, but Special K cereals is one of my favorite foods so I just can’t give it up. But I do wish Kellogg’s Special K would use natural sweeteners.

What are your thoughts on Kellogg’s Special K?

Q: What are some average ingredients in a cereal?
For health I have to create my own cereal. I call them “Fruity Faces”. Wonderful I know, jk. They’re just like Froot Loops or Trix but in the shape of a smiley face. They’re also the same color as the above cereals. So, what ingredients should I list? I already know I’m using “the natural sugars (NO ADDED SUGAR) from the fruit that I made them from” so sugar isn’t included. +& I am definetly not being lazy with this project, it took me 1 hour to make the cover and another hour to make MY OWN nutrition facts label thing. So thanks for all help!

A: For some reason I think of rice as the main grain in your cereal, I don’t know why… maybe rice and wheat. Use fruit juice concentrates as the sweetener (blueberry, raspberry, apple… I can’t remember what the flavors of froot loops are, but you get the point)

So it would be like:
Rice flour, Wheat flour, fruit juice concentrates (list them in parenthesis), maybe some corn starch, salt.

Q: need help on math homework?
our teacher assigned us a wierd math project. we had to do a cereal box, we had to label it, draw, make games on back like a normal cereal box would have, and the nutrition facts, and i think the ingrediants. the problem is that i dont know what to put on the box for nutrition or the ingrediants, the name of the box is ” Cherry-O’s ” LOL..

For the ingredients label, just look at another can of food you have. Ingredients are listed by weight of stuff in the can. Heaviest first.

For you assignment, do you have to put exactly what’s in the box or can you ad-lib and put humor into your project.

Q: what are ‘other carbohydrates?’?
I ate cereal for breakfast and dinner today. They are both low-fat and cholosterol free but they do cary carbs. They were to different kinds of cereal though. On the nutrition facts it listed:

-Other carbohdrates

Their listed right below one another. Are ‘other carbohydrates’ bad for you? What are they? I am on a diet so should I stop eating this cereal?

A: You are correct about “other carbohydrates”. Cereals are highly processed and most of them are junk that includes a lot of sugar. This is something most people ignore but don’t realize that in a fat loss diet, dry cereals are some of the worst things you can have. Just look at the ingredients and look for the added sugars, nearly all of them have it. Also, there are going to be lots of additives and preservatives as well as other chemicals. Nothing wholesome about that.

The fact is that bad ingredients don’t make up for the presence of good ingredients. You’d be a lot better off with a low GI carb like whole oatmeal in the morning with some egg whites and fruit and a lean meat like chicken or fish in the evenings with some fibrous veggies.

Here’s an example of a so-called “healthy” diet cereal that is heavily marketed as healthy but in reality is not:

The vitamins and minerals are added after the fact using substandard ingredients, nothing as good as you’d find in whole foods. Skipping past that, look at the ingredients, it has sugar as one of the primary ingredients, followed not far behind by HFCS! This is the kind of thing they hope you don’t catch hold of by swaying you with the low calorie claims.

There are different kinds of carbs, it’s simplistic to think they are all the same. High GI carbs and low GI carbs make up the two types. It’s up to the manufacturer to determine what is listed as “other carbs”, you have to devine for yourself what is actually in the ingredients. Most people don’t have a clue what they’re eating and trust the manufacturer to guide them right, a bad move to make as the manufacturer does not care about the health of consumers just the bottom line.

Additionally, you want to avoid carb heavy foods later at night. As it gets later in the day the cells become less insulin responsive, meaning they cannot uptake nutrients as well. Carbs in this case will tend to be shunted to energy storage (bodyfat). Plus, unless you’re an advanced athlete, glycogen stores are already full so you don’t need the extra carbs.

A: 190 calories is high for a cereal, but it does have 8g of fiber.

Overall, it looks pretty good. You seem to get a fair amount of nutrition for that 190 calories. I would stick to one bowl a day though and use skim milk.

Q: What’s more damaging to a healthy body, excessive sugar or excessive sodium?
I usually look at the nutrition facts in things I eat. I also compare between brands to see which one is better for me. For instance some cereals have the same amount of fiber and protein; however, they differ in amount of sugar and sodium, which confuses me as to which one I should decide on. If or when found in this situation, which one would you choose (more sugar or more sodium)? Why?

A: Sugar is an antinutrient and will drain your body of vitamins & minerals essential to good health. Your body requires unrefined salt.

Q: Why do so many foods lie about trans fat?
Many foods say 0g of trans fat in the nutrition facts box. Take your favorite cereal for example. But if you look in the ingredients, it will probably say “Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil,” from what I heard on “The Doctors”, they are the same exact thing. Why do these companies lie? How much trans fat is in the food? Is there any difference? Can I ever eat cereal ever again? How are these companies able to get by with these lies? Is there any danger to such trace amounts of trans fat? Why am I asking you all these questions? Wait, the answer to the last one I already know. It’s because I have all these questions.

A: By law, certain foods or additive don’t have to be listed if there is less than say, 1 gram of fat. Many of those products may have .80 grams but since it is not a gram they are allowed to say it is fat free.

You’ll also note when reading ingredients on any food, the item with the largest amount in the package is listed first. Then on down the list. You also have to consider that there is very little food that has totally zero fat in it. Even eggs hard boiled will have some fat in them.

Then you have to remember that carbs, if you eat too many, will turn into body fat anyhow. Just has to convert first. At least in the US if it is less than 1 gram of a certain item, it can be listed as being free of that item or 0 percent.

A: The government,USDA, has guidelines called minimum daily requirements for good nutrition. these are in percentages of what you need each day. In one reference you can calculate what you need according to your weight, height etc.

Q: why are all the cereals that tastes good so sweet? Is that to make sure that the kiddies will eat them?
I love oatmeal. but the minute I attempt to eat dry cereal, I find they are ALL VERY SWEET (lots of sugar) and so people dilute it with milk, fruits etc. Now today, I read that cereals are not good for people at all because of all the sugar content. Immediately I thought ” RIGHT ON!”

A: I don’t think you’d get much help in this section, although I know what you are trying to do, But I’m not sure if you want a name as you’ve already chosen the title, I will check back to see if you’ve given more details

Q: Is this a good alternative dinner meal?
I am putting myself on my own diet, counting calories and exercising everyday. I went out a bought a couple of things to help me lower my calorie intake such as Special K bars, Special K cereal, and campbell’s chunky soup. My question is some such as the soup a good meal for dinner to help me lose the extra weight, here are the nutrition facts:

A: To tell you the truth, I feel that the soup is going to be a problem if you eat it every day. Look at your sodium, 890mg is VERY high. In addition you have sugars, and 9grams of fat is not the best for your serving size. As a trainer, I’ve been taught to avoid most if not all pre-packaged foods. They contain many preservatives (which are bad for you, such as MSG). Your protein is very low. You need to make your dinners in equal portions, e.g. protein should be the size of your palm (about 5-6oz. Carbs should be the size of your fist, etc. Bake your chicken, steam your veggies etc. Drink lots of water. If you can’t afford a trainer, check out Bill Phillips book, eating for life. I feel that out of every fad out there, bill sticks to the old style, equal portions of carbs, proteins, and fats. He walks you through the text, it’s an easy read. All the recipes are included, it’s worth the investment. The recipes are easy to make, in addition you spend very little time making them, most stay around 600-800 calories per meal. You have anywhere between 3grams to 7 grams of fat per meal. Carbs are at the correct ratio, and you’ll have energy for your workouts. Good luck, any more questions, don’t hesitate to contact me.
