Q: Chest and back pain due to Acid Reflux or Intestinal issues?
I have not been technically diagnosed with either. I have a doctors appointment for what I think is IBS. For 10 years I have had on a daily basis diarrhea, constipation, horrible gas, and cramps. I always just assumed that’s what it was, but with recent events I decided to find out for sure.

As for GERD. The ENT has never specifically mentioned it. I have heart burn daily and recently had my throat scoped. I have had a sore throat for 6+ months. He didn’t find anything a perscribed me some pills that I forget to take.

Before I visited the ENT for the throat the doctor had done some chest x-rays and found nothing to explain the chest pain. It’s usually in the middle of my chest and it was just assumed it was due to the acid reflux.

Starting about 2 weeks ago I have been having random upper and lower back pain. It’s usually in between the shoulder blades. I can’t pin point anything that makes it worse. Breathing deep, exercise, sitting, laying, nothing seems to make the pain worse. It truly is random. It comes and goes and tends to feel like it’s in different spots. It’s a hard pain to explain. Most times dull and not usually a sharp pain. Sometimes I think it may even feel like the pains in my chest.

Could Acid Reflux and intestinal problems be causing my back and chest pain? Anyone else have similar problems?

I have a doctors appointment tomorrow for them to start looking into things. I really hope it’s nothing serious.

Also as a side note. I’m not running a fever or experiencing shortness of breath. My chest feels excellent. I would think that if it were a lung problem I would be having other symptoms, but I’m not a doctor so what do I know?

A: I won’t try to second guess your future doctor visit. I do think that your doctor will find several problems though.
You should never ignor the symptoms you described. You could have anything from a simple excess stomach acid all the way through colon cancer. The human body tries to heal itself no matter what is wrong. Sometimes this process actuallly makes the situation worse and harder to fix. pp

Q: Mild but persistent chest discomfort. Slight shortness of breath. HELP YOUR ADVICE IS NEEDED?
I’m 21 years old and I’ve been experiencing mild chest discomfort lately. Right in the the center , i assume the center of the chest bone. I feel a slight heat and it feels like a cough is suppressed. Something is definitely not right. I first starting feeling the discomfort after going and watching Date Night. I remember laughing so much that my chest started hurting.

I suffer from GERD aka Acid Reflux. I tried to go off my med (proton pump inhibitor) for 2 days to see if my body could do without but the heartburn was just too annoying so i went back to them. Now I know that acid reflux can cause some chest pains. But this is not a pain like anything i’ve experienced before. Wouldn’t describe it as pain but rather discomfort and i’m being very conscious of how slow i’m breathing which means there is some difficulty in breathing.

Does this sound serious ? or could it be just one of those things that go away ?
It’s been 2 days now .. I remember not feeling a thing after getting back from the movies . I remember cleaning my apartment (heavy duty btw) and then burning some incense. Now this could be the reason behind my discomfort. The apartment was filled with smoke – but smelled nice.

Please advice me. I’m in Paris now and it’s quite late. I don’t want to go to the A&E because i know i will have troubles getting a cab back home.

Does any of this sound serious ?
PS. I’m a major hypochondriac so any advice will help me feel better than i do now

A: OK, so im 16 years old……..and i am healthy……

one day, just randomly i started experiencing pain on left side of chest, and left shoulder blade, and left side of back…

well…see the thing was, i TRIED to “bare” with the pain for 2 days, but then finally went to hospital for checkup,,,,and the result…was NOT good.

I had a collapsed lung…..not trying to scare you..BUT let me ask you these questions..

Do u feel pain WHILE breathing? , when you breathe, does pain increase?
shortness of breath for more than one day?
pain or discomfort for more than one day?

if yes to any of them…i would say GO right now to urgent care..doctor…ER..asap

SEE – it might just be normal..pain will go away..u will have nothing to worry about..but im teling you this cuz THATS what I thought…and it turned out to be…worse..

so i would say go..if it has been more than one WHOLE day..

GOOD LUCK :) – hopefully your fine and nothings wrong :)

BTW – your just worrying about it, that WONT help…what if everythings fine?…just go and put your mind to rest..worrying DOEs NOT help

Q: What is causing my horrible lower chest/upper abdomen pain and shortness of breath?
To fill in the gaps: In early september I had my gallbladder removed because it was only functioning 23%. Yes, I did have a lot of pain before and have been told I might have some up to 6 months afterward. I also have asthma. But I wake up almost every night and am up at least an hour with horrible pain in my low rib cage.

I do not have acid reflux/heart burn, because I have had an endoscopy to check for it. What else could it be? Should I get it checked? Is there anything I can do to help it?
I should probably add that I’m a 19 year old female college student…

I also have strange smelling pee my mom said acidic, maybe metallic …and pebble shaped poop (tonight held together by white mucus)

Q: pain in my lungs when i breath in all the way and breath out all the way, ?
today ive been having pain in my lungs when i breath all the way in and out. plus for the last week i have felt more fatigued and shortness of breath. i dont have a cough, or a cold. i am 27 135lbs, i cant even exercise lately cause im out of breath. its like a stabbing pain in my lungs. i also suffer from acid reflux and it has been bothering me today pretty bad. do i have an infection? i have never had pneumonia and rarely get sick

A: It may be asthma? i’d go to your GP and have it checked out to make sure it’s nothing too serious, see if your GP will prescribe something for the acid reflux. Do you smoke? if so quit.
Lung pain, shortness of breath and fatigue can also be associated with anemia so get your blood levels checked out. Good luck

Q: Would you have this test or get a second opinion???
I have acid reflux disease (GERDS) and take medication for it sometimes I do have chest pain, high above my breast and pressure and soreness all the way thru to my back, my old Dr called it esophagel spasms, I also have severe anemia which can cause chest pain, shortness of breath and weakness, I’m not absorbing the iron because of my stomach. Now my question I have a new Dr and he wants me to have a Nuclear stress test for heart disease I’m terified of the radioactive dye and I’m sure I will fail the activity part due to the anemia, should I refuse the test? get a second opinion and get the anemia corrected first and then have the stress test. Serious opinions please or if you have had the stress test yourself.
Thanks

A: Hi, I understand your fear of the nuclear stress test. Having just had the same symptoms you describe above over Christmas, I had a nuclear stress test on the advice of cardiologist, but I was terrified to have it. They thought i was possibly having esophageal spasm (because nitroglycerin can relieve those and chest pain), but not sure because there were strong heart symptoms too. the test is very accurate. The dye is not bad and I had no side effects (I am especially sensitive to medications and dyes) and the test really showed that nothing was going on with my heart, thankfully, so I (and my doctors) could be sure of this. You just do your best on the exercise part and if you can’t go any more, they don’t force you. Try the test–it will give you a better understanding of what’s going on. See if the doctor will give you a little something for anxiety before the test as well. But I say go for it.

Q: I feel something may be under the skin by my sternum. Any ideas as to what it might be?
Hi guys, for about 2 years now i have felt like a weird sensation under my skin around my sternum region (Between the Inferior Vena Cava and the Lower Aorta on this picture http://micromumbai.com/human-body11.jpg

With this i also get sensations of shortness of breath (when exterting myself alot) and also whilst asleep, causing me to wake up gasping for air sometimes. My latest BP reading read 120/79.

Also when i get up from a seated or lying down position i feel like im going black and theres a rush in my head going on.

I also have suffered badly with acid reflux over this time.

Can someone relate to this problem? Is it something minor or something major (like an enlarged heart or aorta)? Its really hard to describe but it feels as if something is under my skin and yet it isnt causing any kind of sharp pain. Its more dull because i know its there but isnt painful. I run my finger along this point but cant feel anything. Without docs intervention, how can i check myself?
like when one checks themselves for potential breast cancer, they advise you check in the shower as it makes it easier to detect.

I am a male by the way, 24 years of age.

A: You really need to see a doctor.

A: If you truly have all those symptoms, it could well be Lyme disease. You might also have co-infections (other stuff the tick gives you at the same time it gives Lyme.) You need to be evaluated by a doctor experienced in the treatment and diagnosis of chronic Lyme. That would be one affiliated with ILADS (International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society.) I suggest you join the conversation at www.lymenet.com, to connect with others who have similar symptoms, and to get recommendations for a doc in your area. And please, educate yourself about this complicated disease.

Q: Does anyone know what could be causing chest pains? Other than heart attack
I know it’s not a heart attack. I’m 24, the pain comes & goes, sometimes months apart, it may hurt for a couple of hours, a day, and then it just goes away for awhile. I used to think it was acid reflux or heartburn, or even gas, now I’m not sure. It helps when I bend over, it gets worse if I sit back, kinda stretching my upper body. It’s really sharp pain, that sometimes makes me want to cry! It also sometimes hurts in my back & usually just hurts in my bottom chest area, where my heart is. It also sometimes causes me shortness of breath. If anyone can help, please let me know. Thanks!

A: I have a healthy heart but I still get chest pains, due to heart burn and maybe acid reflux. I also went a long time with a cracked rib that never healed, and that was a bother.

But regardless of your age, if you’re having chest pains like to describe, for peace of mind if nothing else, get thee to a doctor and get it checked out. A colleague’s kid had a heart attack at age 21, so it’s nothing to fool around with.

Q: Is chest pain asthma related?
I was diagnosed with allergy induced asthma when I was eight, and I never really had trouble with it. Just recently I’ve been experiencing a sharp pain when I take a deep breath. I do have acid reflux, but it hasn’t caused this before. Could this be the asthma coming back with my seasonal allergies? I’ve also done research on Costchondritis, and it also could be this. Does anyone have any idea? Basically, when I take a deep breath there is a sharp pain on my upper, left chest about four inches down from my collar bone. I do feel some shortness of breath because I can’t fully inhale without feeling the pain, but it’s just annoying rather than life-threatening.
I’m not a smoker, nor do I live with smokers. I don’t live near a large source of smog; my enviroment is pretty much smoke/smog/air pollution free other than exhaust from cars.

A: You’re absolutely right with your self diagnisis. Costochonditis. It will diminish with time but I’m afraid it could come back at any time.
God bless.

Q: Best and Worst of Pregnancy?
Hope this is a little break from all the serious questions… :)

What are some of your favorite things about pregnancy AND your least favorite??

My favorite thing has been my huge belly and you start to waddle (33 weeks) and you can tell people look at you and are thinking “awwwww”

My least favorite is the horrendous acid reflux it has caused (and the constant shortness of breath in the last trimester)

A: My favorite is the little kicks that the baby gives.

My least favorite is the heartburn and constant burping after I drink water. I feel like if I drank soap with my water I would look like a walking bubble making machine.

I also enjoy the special treatment that I get now that I am showing, more people help with groceries, opening doors, carrying things and such, it makes me feel special.

20 weeks and 20 more to go. (my husband said the bun is half baked) :)

Q: A bunch of symptoms????????
20 year old male ex-smoker.
I know I should go to a doctor, but I want to get other opinions first.

Symptoms:
Episodes of Lightheadedness
Heart Palpitations
Shortness of Breath
Lots of stomach gas
Regurgitation
Acid Reflux
The feeling of something “moving” or “existing” in the center of my chest
Hot flashes
Fatigue
Anxiety
Benign PVCs and PACs
Fast pulse

I have had an ECG, Echocardiogram, Stress Test, Holter Monitor, Event Monitor, various blood tests, Chest X-ray, Head CT Scan.

Basically, I am constantly salivating, and having to spit all the time. I regurgitate a lot of mucus and (I know its nasty) when I try to burp for instance, I regurgitate like vomit and mucus and stuff and my body naturally swallows it back down…and I have a lot of gas ALL the time. It feels like there is something in my chest that is putting pressure on my heart and my abdomen and causing my HR to go really fast, palpitate, and I feel short of breathe. I get a lot of anxiety attacks too…

I had mild asthma as a kid, but it doesn’t feel like asthma.

Can hiatus hernias be picked up by chest X-rays?
I get chest pain as well
Sorry I forgot these:

Short-term memory loss (lol)
Trouble thinking of words to say (sometimes)
Muscle spasms and tremors
Heart scans all came back normal.

I get PVCs and PACs that apparently are benign

A: Yea if this is legit, you have some sort of condition that transcends all of our knowledge and you need to see some spcialists, liek a cardiologist or a gastroenterologist.

As for hiatal hernias, typically I believe they make you consume a barium liquid and then take xrays/CT scans etc to watch what the fluid does. Have you considered getting an ultrasound?

Are you consuming a lot of alcohol or caffeine? Are you on any weird homeopathic drugs, drinking weird teas, or taking diet pills/hormone supplements/”protein” shakes/etc?

What were the results of your heart scans?

Q: What is causing my husband’s chest pain?
My husband has had intermittent chest pain for about 4 years. He has had x-rays which have come back clear and he is a smoker. A few nights ago he started to get acid reflux while sleeping and he wakes up coughing and choking as some of the acid is making it’s way into his lungs.
When he woke yesterday he was suffering from severe chest pain after having had another acid reflux episode during the night. We thought it might still be the acid reflux and he had some mylanta and zantac but neither helped much. He is still in pain today and feels that he may have suffered an esophageal tear (he has had one of these before back in his young and wild days when he was a bit of a drinker).

Could his stomach acid perforate his esophagus? What else could cause such a sudden aggravation.

He has recently gone to a 2nd doctor about the intermittent chest pain but still we are no closer to working out what is causing the initial chest pain. The 2nd doctor has advised him not to quit smoking until we know what the chest pain is. That doctor thinks it’s stress, but put him on antibiotics as well.

He doesn’t cough much and has noted a shortness of breath over the last 2 days but nothing he is overly worried about he says. It’s a long weekend and we can’t get him in to see the doctor until tomorrow but he won’t go and get checked at the emergency because he says he’s tough and will just ride it out.

I’m worried… any ideas what either of these things may be? If he has an esophageal tear, what can I do to make him more comfortable?

A: You mentioned acid reflux, read about the pancreas see if that has your answer.

Q: can anxiety attacks make your lungs/chest area sore?
I am 24 y/o and I only smoke socially which is very rare since I suffer from anxiety.

Two weeks ago I had severe panic attacks 7 days straight. Shortness of breath, chest tightening, hard to breath, intense fear and feeling of doom (Docs tell me my heart is fine (because I’m always thinking it’s heart related), so I know my experiences are panic related).

But now for the past week I have severe heartburn/acid reflux, and when I try and take a deep, slow breath, it gets a little tight in my chest, like if I had pnemonia (had that once). I can take the breath, but it’s not totally comfortable.

I am healthy (at least I think so)…not coughing, no mucus, I don’t have allergies, I don’t sneeze.

Do you think the constant strain on my muscles from 7 days of attacks has caused this feeling?

I made an appt. w/my doctor in two weeks…I read the acid can make it hard to take a deep breath. I’m thinking I have acid reflux all of a sudden b/c of the constant panic and stress…

Any thoughts???

A: Dont ignore panick attacks face them, yell BEAT FASTER like you mean it!! or IS THAT ALL YOU GOT?!?! CMON BEAT FASTER!!!!!

It might sound retarded but it can work if you really mean it as you go with the fear and not against the fear, you arent fighting back like a tug-of-war, you wanna face it.
Notice you wont get panick attacks whenever you try to, its all psychological

Q: Feeling Guilty! Serious Answers.?
Ok I’m 20 years old. I met a guy my freshman year of college and we’ve been dating since then. I feel like I’m being used sometimes. He moved with me my 2nd year and we’ve been staying together everysince. He pay no bills and he don’t work. This past semester he was told he couldn’t come back to school. Lat mothers day I met a guy and he was really nice, we were friends for a while and we suddenly ended our frienship. This christmas we hung out again and just recently when I went home I spent the nigh with mhim at a hotel. We didn’t have any sexual interrcourse. All of a sudden I have started to feel guilty. I have told my boyfriend about it and he told me about some of his friends and about a girl that he let dance on him at a friend house. However what I did, i feel was extreme! This is my 2nd time feeling like this. I have ben to the hospital because of a panic attack/anxiety attack. The doctors told me that I have acid reflux so maybe that’s the cause of some of the shortness of breath I’ve been having. I had a therapy appointment yesterday. I just hate feeling guility and like I’ve hurt someone. I feel like I’m dieing. I have cancelled my spring break trip because I feel so bad! Can someone help me! (excuse the typos) just nervous and scared! Be blessed! Thanks

A: You need to get out of all relationships and settle down with yourself before you move on to other people. You have serious self-esteem issues that must be worked out. You have let another walk all over your for years, yet think you are the bad one???? Get a grip! You are a nice person who deserves far better treatment. Get rid of the jerk you are living with, make a life BY yourself before you share it with anyone! GW

Q: extremely tired?
I’m 17 years old.
For the past few months, I’ve been experiencing anxiety; I’m worried about my health. I had my mitral valve repaired when I was 7 years old, and I’ve been to the cardiologist within the past few months and everything checks out fine — I only have extremely minimal leakage, which is normal (they don’t close the hole all the way). I’ve had chest pains and pains in my left arm before, along with shortness of breath, and my doctor said that it was not heart-related. I got the pains again today, and I had trouble breathing, only the pains were pretty severe and lasted almost all day. My doctor said I had GERD/Acid Reflux as well, which I had as a baby too. I’ve been going to the chiropractor for about the past month, and I have a misaligned rib; I’m pretty sure that this can cause chest pain. But today I’m SO tired. I’ve been tired for the past few days as well, and I’m usually a little fatigued due to hyperthyroidism.

Is this due to stress/anxiety or something else?

A: The rib problem can definitely cause chest pain, but it could also be caused by spasms in your arteries. That would be transient and wouldn’t necessarily show up on an ECG; it would cause pain; and it could also cause you to feel tired. But any time you have chest pain — especially if you have a cardiac history — you should contact your cardiologist. Good luck!
