Q: Any tips for infant with acid reflux?
Im the father of a 9 week old newborn. He has been diagnosed with acid reflux. We have tried every type of formula, Zantac, and now Prevacid, and nothing seems to help. We sleep him upright at night, and if anything things have gotten worse because he is now eating a bit more. He is fine, but an hour after he eats, he starts getting a gurgle sound. While he doesnt spit up, he begins to scream and sometimes burps again..this makes him scream even more. At night, he sleeps, but flails around constantly due to that mean old gurgle.
The pediatricians told us to wait it out. Im not sure if that is an option and I have heard severe acid reflux could cause asthma later on. If anyone has any tips I would appreciate them. I’m also thinking of taking my child to a gastroenterology doc as well.

A: If little tips (like changing formula or sitting him upright) don’t help, then it times to get a prescription from the doctor for his acid reflux. My daughter also had acid reflux and once we started giving her medical, everything helped better.

Q: Is this Asthma? Or what else could it be? Acid Reflux?
I have been having some difficulty breathing for a while and my doctors have not found the answer. It’s not that I don’t trust my doctors. I think they have not felt a need to dig deep since it doesn’t regularly affect my breath capacity.

It’s very hard to describe the feeling and there are a lot of things that happen. It’s sort of like when I breathe my chest becomes sort of tight and it sort of feels as if I’m breathing in a chemical. It causes a sort of ache/burning in my throat. It feels like the air coming from my lungs is sort of cold. Sometimes it will feel as if I cannot catch my breath but doesn’t affect my ability to breathe,
In addition I get either phlegm stuck in my throat or a feeling that my throat is too open. I get a tight ache int he middle of my chest but more surface feeling like it’s my ribs than my heart. I also get a feeling of pressure under my ribs in my upper back and the same area feels like I’m sweating localized in this part of my body. The breathing does not seem to be changed by exertion although sometimes when doing cardio I get a very weak feeling which I’ve been told is adrenaline crash. I do have problems breathing then going up long flights of stairs.
I have been diagnosed with
Acid reflux(symptom diagnosis and ruled out other issues..have had upper Gi and Esophagus barium studies but no endoscope)

Allergies to dogs and cats (proven with scratch test…live with 2 dogs)
IBS
my allergist said he thinks I may have mild occasional asthma but it did not show up on chest x rays and breathing tests have been fine, blood work is excellent. I had a full cardiac work up a year and a half ago and everything was good.

Thanks Matt, very helpful, My Allergist perscribed Asthmanex but I was afraid to use it…should I try the over the counter stuff like prymatine? I have an emergancy inhaler but have not felt a need for it

A: Well, Acid reflux can start asthma attacks. Asthma is an allergy and you have confirmed allergies. Asthma is an episodic disease that come and goes. A standard breathing test will not pick up on asthma unless you are having an attack during the test. A methacholine challenge test is the gold standard test for asthma where they actully induce an asthma attack in the pulmonary function testing lab and measure it along with how well they can reverse it with a bronchodilator. Same with an X-ray, unless you are having an attack or the attacks were bad enough to scar the lungs, it should be normal.

I would guess from what you have said, it is asthma exacerbated by acid reflux.

Asthma can be controlled. You will need to speak with your doctor about an asthma action plan with a rescue inhaler and controller medication to start off with. You need to monitor your peak flows (get a meter at the docs office) each morning to see if you are breathing well enough to continue with everyday life. The meter can detect decreases in air flow before you get out of breath.

Talk to your doctor about a medication to control acid reflux. Keep your house clean and never let pets sleep in your bed. Wash bedding and pillows on a regular basis and change out your pillows every 3-6 months to minimize dust mite exposure.

Primatine is a rescue inhaler and a strong one. It has many side effects like high heart rate, increased blood pressure, dry mouth, nervous shaky feeling and jitters. The prescription rescue inhaler the doctor gave you is better but has some of these same side effects, much less.

Asthmanex is not a rescue inhaler. It is a low dose inhaled steroid. It needs to be taken everyday for it to work properly. A steroid will help prevent inflammation in your airway. One of the two components of asthma.

Q: what are foods i can eat having acid reflux?
i have acid reflux and have tried not to eat at all because the reflux bothers my asthma and makes it hard to breathe. are there any foods good for buffering the acid so i don’t suffer the consquences of eating?

A: acid reflux happens because you’re eating Too Fast. Slow down and chew your food thoroughly – meaning until it is liquid in your mouth. And most definitly Do Not Drink while eating. Let your body digest the food that natural way. Drink 30 minutes prior or 45 minutes after eating.

Q: Heart Problems OR Acid Reflux OR Black mold OR ??
I recently noticed a feeling that I could only describe as a shaking/surging feeling coming just one inch rite from the center of my chest when I exhale sometimes (oposit side from my heart) and one time I felt the sensation up to my neck. I also noticed I can feel my heart beat thru my chest, upper arms and neck if I sit still……………………………… I’m 28 and haven’t been getting any exercise for the past year. When I was a pre-teen doctors checked me for having an irregular heart beet but tests came up clear. I had my blood pressure taken two months ago and I guess it was fine since they didn’t tell me the results (came in for a back problem). I also have allergies and asthma with related acid reflux problems. I also recently discovered black mold growing at my home in the walls. I’m unemployed and no health insurance so I can’t afford the doctor bill for even a check up for at least 2 weeks.

A: GO TO YOUR WALGREEN

Q: WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY BODY? I KNOW IT’S NOT JUST ACID REFLUX IT’S SOMETHING ELSE? CAN ANYONE HELP?
I HAVE HEARD IT ALL FROM ALLERGIES TO ASTHMA AND FROM ACID REFLUX TO HERNIA. WHAT EVER THE DIAGNOSIS I’M STILL FEELING ILL.
THIS IS THE PROBLEM THAT I HAVE COME TO UNDERSTAND OVER TIME: I SPIT A LOT AND IT’S NOT REGULAR SALIVA FROM MY MOUTH, IT’S THICK SALIVA OR ACID(?) FROM MY STOMACH, SO FAR I CAN DEAL WITH THIS. THE RARE PROBLEM ABOUT THIS IS THAT NOT ALL THINGS THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO BE BAD FOR ACID REFLUX SUFFERERS ARE BAD FOR ME. I HAVE NOTICE THAT I CAN DRINK PURE ORANGE JUICE WITH HARDLY ANY SPITTING SAME AS HOME MADE SALSA OR REGULAR TOMMATOES WHICH I DID NOT EAT FOR A LONG TIME THINKING THEY WERE BAD. INSTEAD SUGAR IN DRINKS MAKES ME SPIT RIGHT AWAY. AND IF IT’S CARBONATED IS EVEN WORSE. ANOTHER THING IS REGULAR DISTILLED VINEGAR IT MAKES ME SPIT TOO. WHEN I’M SPITTING IT USUALLY LASTS FOR 20 MINUTES TO AN HOUR. THE WORST IS IN THE MORNING AFTER A DINNER THAT WAS NOT GOOD FOR MY STOMACH. ALSO FRIED FOODS MAKE ME SPIT. NOW, MOST PEOPLE THINK IT’S JUST TOO MUCH ACID BUT ANTIACIDS DON’T WORK I’VE TRIED THEM ALL FROM NEXIUM TO PRILOSEC YOU NAME IT. WHAT THEY DO THEY MAKE MY STOMACH REALLY TIGHT THAT I FEEL VERY UNCOMFORTABLE. THIS IS THE OTHER PROBLEM WHEN EVERYBODY TELLS ME IT’S THE ACID REFLUX THEN I GO INTO EXTREME DIET THINKING IT WOULD GO AWAY. THE SPITTING STOPS FOR A WHILE BUT IF I EAT OR DRINK SOMETHING SWEET IT COMES BACK. AND I START ALL OVER AGAIN. OTHER TIMES I’M TAKING ANTIACIDS AT NIGHT AND IN THE MORNING I CAN HARDLY BREATH FROM A LOT OF PRESURE IN MY STOMACH. I THINK MY PROBLEM LIES WITHIN TWO THINGS A PART OF MY BODY THAT REJECTS SUGAR OR FRUCTOSE AND PERHAPS A LACK OF SUFFICIENT LEVELS OF STOMACH ACID, CONTRARY TO TOO MUCH ACID, AS MOST DOCTORS HAVE SUGGESTED. IT’S NOT EVEN THE H-PILLORI BACTERIA. ANYONE OUTHERE WHO COULD HELP, PEASE I’M DESPERATE AND TIRED OF DOCTORS GUESSING ON MY CONDITION AND GETTING IT WRONG.

A: Hello~
It sounds like it could be a combo of Gastroparisis and yeast/fungus issues in the gut. They often go together since with Gastroarisis your stomach can not digest food at a normal rate so food gets rancid from sitting in there. See a gastro doc for these tests and in the mean time you could try some good bacteria supplements (probiotics, refrigerated quality). Also, antacids often make Gastroparisis worse.

I hope you get some good medical answers soon and feel better fast!

Q: Went to the emergency room with asthma and the doctor said i had acid reflux????!!!?
I went to the ER on tuesday for an asthma flare up. I had this uncontrollable cough so bad i felt like i was going to throw up. My chest felt like something was sitting on me and i had this pain in the middle of my chest. This happens to me quite often during the fall/winter and i have been dealing with this since i was a little kid. Anyway, i don’t often wheeze when i have asthma attacks. I present with real bad coughing. When i got to the ER and told the doctor that, they where saying that i had indegestion. My mom is a RN and was arguing with the doctor because they werent treating me properly (i.e. giving me a treatment because i had difficulty breathing), instead they were giving me maalox like retards. My mom made them give me a treatment but they were still insisting on the reflux. When we were about to leave, the doctor gave me a prescription for nexxium(which i wont be taking because i never had indegestion, trust me i know what it feels like and was feeling any burning on my esophagus, it was just pain from coughing so much and so hard) My mom said that a lot of doctors do this when they dont hear any wheezing. Doctors need to realize that not everyone has wheezing with their asthma and actually help people (no offense to doctors out their). Has any of you guys had an experience like this?

A: Yes. My asthma attacks are the same way. I just cough a bunch and sometimes end up gasping for air. I’ve never had acid reflux either. I’ve come to not expect a whole lot from doctors and such. I’ve spent a week in the hospital being poked and prodded just to be discharged still not knowing what had made me sick. I’ve also had an ambulance EMT guy put in the nose oxygen things upside down, lol. That was an experience.

Q: does anyone know of a natural cure for acid reflux?
i recently was diagnosed with acid reflux after spending a day and a half in the hospital being tested for heat attack/disease.
now i have asthma which was caused by acid reflux.
yippie!!!!!
i would rather take something natural if possible.
i read about apples.
does anyone know of any natural treatments for the acid reflux??????

A: try ditching the milk and dairy products for a few days ……… that may alleviate the nasty pain of acid reflux for you ……. lactose intolerance will produce acid reflux, achy bones, bloating and constipation, excessive belching, excessive gas, ribbony and stringy shaped stools, wet f*arting (sorry, no other way to put it) ……. in the meantime, put a teaspoon full of baking soda into a mug full of warm water, stir up and drink up …… be prepared to belch loudly and for the pain to increase a little for a few minutes but it will realkalise your system and quell the pain for you…….. baking soda does contain an awful lot of processed salt so it wouldn’t be appropriate if you have high blood pressure …. otherwise, only use it as a temporary measure and try to pinpoint what is causing the bad digestion …… bad digestion is the source of your acid reflux……. increase the production of hydrochloric acid in your tummy by chowing down on more leafy and green vegies like broccolli, kale, chard, celery, buk choy ………. all rich in magnesium (known as the antistress mineral) and calcium so also great for brain frizz, stress and anxiety, constipation, insomnia ………. ;0)

drink loads of fresh filtered water too buddy to ensure you are properly hydrated …. your lungs need water to breath, your joints need water to lubricate them, your digestive system needs water to digest food, your brain needs it to think…….. every single cellular function your body performs needs water ……. drink up and ditch the sodas, pop and soft drinks if you drink any cos they’ll all dehydrate you terribly and keep your body in an acid condition ……… promoting bad digestion.

peace baby

Q: My daughter applied for ssi for her 3 month old baby?
her baby has a sleep apnea machine, asthma, acid reflux, and was born premature, she applied and was denied she can not work for now and the help afdc gives her is not much, can she re apply i heard that kids with asthma gets ssi, the doctor said this could be going on until he is a year old or longer. she is a single mom has a 4 year old plus this baby is a twin. the other one only has acid reflux was born also premature.

A: Yes, tell her to keep applying until it’s approved, and be sure to include copies of any doctors reports she may have. Meanwhile she can apply for State assistance to help sustain her for now. Research all available resources in your area. The U.S.Dept. of Health and Human Services is a great place to start.
I’m disabled and was denied twice before I was finally approved. I called an Attorney for advice and he told me to try once more before taking my case, that third time was the charm..!
I wish her the best…!!

Q: Am I supposed to be in this shape at 20?
I have asthma, acid reflux, arthritis (when it’s cold), heel spurs, schizophrenia, meneiere’s disease, migraines, hypothyroidism, pseudotumor, an overactive pituitary gland, and a cholesterol level of 286. I am only 20 years old. I don’t just sit at home and eat junk food. I usually eat a variety of things. I’m wondering what my life expectancy is (plz dont answer that unless you are a professional!!!) I am being treated, but I feel sick most every day. Here’s the real question: Do you think I would be this way if I lived in the days when they didnt use so many preservatives, hormones, and sodium in food?
I’m a generallly optimistic person, although i have been in depression before and I have been suicidal in the past.
The depression was caused by trauma

A: Yes.. unfortunately . its not your fault you inherited these genes sorry but look on the bright side at least your competent enough to know whats going on and you can still enjoy alot of things.. it could always be worse.

Q: What happens when you go before administative law judge in a hearing for a disability claim for mental stuff?
What happens when you go before an administative law judge in a hearing for a disability claim for mental stuff, ptsd, add, mild retardation, some physical, peptic ulcers, heartburn, acid reflux and asthma? I know somebody that is going and they want my advise on how to handel it and what happens. They have a lawer.

A: The lawyer should be the best one to answer that.

Q: What happens when you go before an administative law judge in a hearing for a disability claim for mental stuf?
What happens when you go before an administative law judge in a hearing for a disability claim for mental stuff, ptsd, add, mild retardation, some physical, peptic ulcers, heartburn, acid reflux and asthma? I know somebody that is going and they want my advise on how to handel it and what happens. They have a lawer. They are really nervious please tell me what happens if you can. Do they talk to you or just the lawer?

A: The record all audio/visual and tell you they have an “expert witness”. When I was told that, I said, ” Well, if this doctor is an expert, I want him for my doctor!”, I also told my attorney for SSDi< I'm not looking for a job. The "expert witness" was not present, but they do send the person notification that they may be in the court room, mine was done by phone, got disconnected and they didn't call him back. So funny. The judge asks a few questions, they can make you wait and they do record you in the waiting area, too. I waited over 2 and 1/2 hours for my 11am appt done at 1pm. Not happy with that. Your friend should get a handicapped plaquard from DMV if eligible/drives. Just need a docs signature for the simple one, respiratory type. (ie, no wheelchairs or other equipment required)

If your friend has PTSD, military related, he/she should contact the VA for disability benefits, too.

There is a rehab person there and a psychologist. If your friend has an atty for an SSDI claim, they must have waited the time period and are eligible for the disability if they can not work. go to socialsecurity.gov and review disability claims. With asthma, certain criteria must be met with resp function acc to age etc. the ALJ determines if the claim is legit or if the person can work or be placed in another job, usually one that is minimum wage, many people get disability for depression, hopefully, your friend will get some medical treatment for the “peptic ulcers”, but also, some people become worse over time instead of better. Soc Sec can review the case in 3 years or so to determine if still disabled.

Q: My baby keeps throwing up and gets sick. Doctors keep diagnosing things and they’re never right. Whats wrong?
He has been sick since he was born. I have taken him to multiple doctor’s yet he never seems to get better. They have diagnosed him with yeast infections, asthma, acid reflux and many other things. He has been known to throw up even 5 times a day. I hate seeing my baby sick yet noone has the answers. There are times when he will sweat really bad and he gets very fussy.

A: Oh boy this sounds familiar..I bet he isn’t sleeping more then 20 minutes at a time either. Have you taken him to a pediatric gastro specialist…children’s tummy expert? Have they actually ran any tests to confirm or deny a diagnosis?
In my instance it took going to the local children’s hospital…my doctor tried to tell me I was over reacting to some spitup and then 2 months later accused me of starving my infant becuase he wasn’t gaining any weight….umm hello they don’t gain weight if there is nothing in their tummy!
We ended up having an allergy to casein, it’s the protein in cow’s milk. Even soy formula has casein added to it. Specialist put him on neutramigen formula and the vomitting ended that day and he slept through the night after the second day. Personally if you are not getting a working solution from your current doctor then there is no reason to stick with them…get a new pediatrician and get some referrals going to get your baby healthy.

Q: 11-month-old baby gets a really stuffed up nose after eating. Acid reflux?
Sometimes a “phlegmy” cough along with it. Doctor advised he had acid reflux when he was 2 months old because he also (dry) coughed a lot in general (and still does). Returned to the doctor several times, same answer but not convinced. Doesn’t seem to matter what he eats. Doctor doesn’t seem to think he’s allergic. Acid reflux, several forms of asthma run in the family, and every known family member is allergic to some foods, airborne allergens, and/or drugs, so hard to say.
Thanks for the ENT doctor idea. This is the only type of doctor he hasn’t seen yet. Think I will take him in.

A: Yes, that could be acid reflux, especially when it happens right after eating. Ear, nose, and throat are all connected. Acid reflux directly effects the throat and that in turn effects the nose and ears. I have acid reflux and I get the sniffles a lot even though I take medicine for it. In addition, a doctor can see the throat irritation that’s otherwise invisible.

Q: Can a child be charged with truancy if the school sends her home?
My daughters both have asthma and acid reflux disorder. The school is constantly sending them home. All they have to do when they are wheezing is let them use their inhalers. Instead of doing that they call me to pick them up. Now they are being charged with truancy, can the school do this?

A: I sincerely doubt it… if you have been called and the school have said

“please come and pick you child up”

then they are REQUESTING THAT THE CHILD LEAVES. They only way they can be charged is if the either leave if feeling sick, or don’t turn up in the first place.

Q: Why do I have a burning in my throat while running?
I have a burning sensation in my throat while running and only while running. This started when I first began training for boot camp. I do not have asthma nor acid reflux. I had a stress test about 6 years ago and everything was clear. I have read posts that it is normal to feel this sensation while running. Can someone give insight into the problem?

A: you may be breathing to deeply making your throat too dry causing it to “burn” but it will probrobly be less burning when you start to get used to your breathing during and after running. but you have to practice
