Q: baby acid reflux: how can I train my baby’s esophagus value to close?
my baby: 2mo 9# has acid reflux. She is on Zantac (o.7ml/2x day) and I heard that you can train the esophagus value [lower esophageal sphincter (LES)] to properly close instead of periodically relaxes and allow reflux to occur.
for adults, this is a method for training, what is it for babies :
“The third thing you can do is train the valve to stay closed. I got this from a doctor. First thing in the morning, drink 8 oz water on an empty stomach. Then raise up on your toes and set back down on your heels quickly, to make the stomach drop. Do this 11 times. It forces the valve at the neck of the esophagus closed. To see this work, fill a balloon with water and hold it by the neck, bounce it. Same principal.”
A: I have never heard of being able to train the LES. I know it’s something they will grow out of, as I am going through the same thing with my baby. My doctor has given approval to thicken the formula with a small amount of rice cereal to help prevent the reflux along with the Zantac, it does help, but we only do it about 2 or 3 times a day.
Q: I have bad acid reflux and my food keeps rising up to my esophagus and choking me until I gasp in and burp.?
Hi I have bad acid reflux and whenever I eat food the food seems to rise up to my throat esophagus area and feels like it’s choking me unless I gasp in air and then I’m able to burp. I can’t just burp normally because the food blocks it or something I have to breathe/gasp in air deep to the top of my throat to get air in there to burp and clear my esophagus so it feels cleared and like I’m stopping choking.
A couple years ago I threw up a lot/almost all of my meals, kind of like bulimia but the food would come up by itself I just let it vomit out instead of swallowing it (I never stuck my finger down my throat the food just came up), that went on a few times daily for about 6 months until I realized it was damaging me and made myself swallow the food back down. I think all that throwing up messed me up even more.
I have had 2 endoscopies and saw an ENT doctor who all looked down there and they said they saw nothing wrong w/ my esophagus area but that was on an empty stomach.
I can’t stop burping like this and it’s making me miserable always having to burp especially around other people is there anything I can do or someone I should see?
Oh I take aciphex for my acid reflux but that doesn’t keep the food from coming up it just takes away the acid from it.
I eat just basic stuff, like stuff that is supposed to not be bad for acid reflux. Like today I just had plain chicken and apple juice and it still comes up and chokes me.
A: I am not a doctor, so either way you will want to talk to them, but this is what I have to say as a long time sufferer of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.)!
Three part answer: information, what not to do, and what to do!
INFORMATION!!!!!!
I have a very severe case of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.). I have had to go to the hospital for some of the heartburn that I have had because the pain can become overwhelming or your breathing can be effected. It can be caused by Smoking, Drinking Beverages with caffeine (My case with hereditary), Drinking Beverages with Alcohol, Stress, Anxiety or can be Hereditary
The good thing about G.E.R.D. is that it can be a temporary thing and can be cured. It is never a permit thing even if you end up with it for the rest of your life it has the ability to be cured.
G.E.R.D. is caused by too much acid being created in your stomach. This can lead to or cause ulcers, esophagus damage, heartburn and/or damage in the mouth. . Other symptoms that can be found in a few cases are dizziness, tingling in limbs, numbness of Limbs, Chest/Back pain focused on the left side (in most cases), and shortness/difficulty breathing.
WHAT NOT TO DO!!!!!!!!
In most cases, stress is a factor to the reflux if you watch what you eat and reduce some of the stress it will help. If you watch what you eat for about a week you should find relief, if you do not then that is when you definitely what to listen to the doctor. Things to watch for are as follows:
Fatty Foods
Citrus Foods
Oranges (Juice and fruit)
Lemon (Juice and fruit)
Foods That Contain Grease
Fried Foods
Potatoes (Starch)
Buffalo wings
Chocolate (including any Coco)
Caffeine
Smoking
Alcohol
Doughnuts
Brownies
Cake
Tomato Based Products
Lactose
Sour Cream
Cottage Cheese
High amounts of Carbohydrates
Roughage (Berries and Nuts)
Onions
WHAT TO DO!!!!
The two foods that I recommend is Black strap Molasses and Raw honey. The apple is better for night time reflux while these will work for just about all of it. What you will do is take about a tsp. of whatever one you chose. Molasses being the better because of strength and nutrition, but must be use to the taste. What the substance will do is stick to the sides of the esophagus and do two things, one is heal and the other is protect.
On the healing end, both substances have a healing property in them, and as they sit on the walls of the esophagus they will heal it. This is also helpful if you have a sore throat in the morning from refluxing.
On the protection end, both substances are high in sugar and when acid that is refluxed comes up to that the sugar will neutralize it and it will not longer be a problem at that point.
I would also look to putting Cinnamon and Ginger in you diet, they have been know to help with digestion and will help you reduce the amount of acid needed to brake down food, therefore causing you to reflux less.
If you follow all of that you should not need medication, but if you would prefer that route look into Ranitidine, I take it to help reduce the food rising up the esphagus.

causing pressure?

Q: is there a test or way to find damages to an infant esophagus due to “LPR” reflux? and are those damages perma
what test are avaliable for a doctor to use to find out the damages of an infant esophagus, from acid reflux disease “LPR” ?, and are those damages permnanet?,if not what is the treatment for damages to the voice box, and esophagus? also, are there anyother tests to ask for, to check for damages due to “LPR”?
or what is the comman test avaliable for this reflux disease?
my baby is 20 months old.
Thank You
A: I’m not familiar with the “LPR”, but GERD is what we usually call Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease. A 24 hour ph test can be done to evaluate your child’s problem. A tiny catheter is placed in one nostril and into the esophagus for 24 hours and will record the ph on a monitor. Your doctor can arrange this for you. Not all hospitals do this test, so depending on where you live, you may need to go to a larger hospital to have it done.
Q: Can acid reflux cause acid to go into the ear?
I feel acid in my esophagus and in the ear, I think.
I feel burning in my ear, not pain
well, acid traveling through my esophagus into my ear passageways or whatever they’re called
A: Acid cannot reach the ears, they are not linked in a manner that acid could travel. Acid can get in in your synisus but that is the furthest it can go.
I am not a doctor, so either way you will want to talk to them, but this is what I have to say as a long time sufferer of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.)!

Q: how does having acid reflux feel. it feel like i have something stuck in my esophagus kinda close to my heart?
it feels like i need to throw up but then dont ..
A: It’s heartburn, but if you need relief eat tums or rolaids…personally tho igo for the peppermint tic tacs…it reduces stomach acid, which causes it (because there is too much)
Q: 3rd day of 5 day water fasting and having terrible acid reflux? What should I do?
I don’t want to stop fasting – only 2 days to go but this reflux has to stop it is killing esophagus.
What do you suggest?
A: what you can do is go get Zantac. It quickly gets rid of acid reflux in the esophagus because i have it. It’s over te counter
Q: What actions should i take for my acid reflux?
I have acid reflex, and it caused a burning, excruciating pain in my throat and esophagus and i went to the doctor, and he tol me to take prevasin and and some other over the counter drug to help, and i havent eaten anything that would make it worse, and now im feeling pain in the right side of my chest and a little under my boob, what can i do to stop the pain?!
A: Unfortunately, my Mum suffers from the same thing. The best she can do to stop it is not to eat less than two hours before going to bed; and, when in bed, to prop herself up on at least five pillows. She says that makes it better during the night.
Hope that was a bit helpful. Take care xxx
Q: Acid reflux and proton pump inhibitors: is there a natural remedy I could get for acid reflux?
I don’t have insurence to pay for the Proton Pum Inhibitor (Protonix) I need. I have bad pain in my esophagus at night without it.
Yes I know all about how I could get cancer in my esophagus.
I just wondered if there was a treatment I could get a the health supplement store for acid reflux.

Q: Does zantac helps out with the formation of the valve that prevents reflux in the esophagus?
My 9# 3oz baby is on zantac for acid reflux. (0.7ml/ 2x day) She still reflux alot without the acid pain but the discomfort of refluxing disrupts her sleep. I was told that it may take upto 1 year for acid reflux to subside and the esophagus and the stomach is mature enough to reduce acid reflux. Question: with her being on zantac, which reduce the irritation of the of esophagus caused by acid, does this means that the formation of the flap/valve in the esophagus will be faster? I am hoping to stop her on zantac as soon as possible and allow her to sleep horizontal so that we can travel with less luggage.
She is breastfeed only
A: Zantac is the trade name of Rantidine , a drug which reduces the formation of Hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
There is a sphincter ( moreless acting like a valve) that prevents anything that enters the stomach during swallowing
passing back to oesophagus ( the tube leading from the throat to the stomach). As the stomach contents are acidic
if they go back to the oesohagus it causes irritation and may even cause ulceration.
Because of immaturity of the sphincter this can happen frequently and may lead to lot of discomfort for the child
To prevent this happening the acidity of the stomach is reduced using Zantac.
Thus the normal process of strengthening of the sphincter will not be adversely affected due to the acidic stomach contents.
Do not stop Zantac until the doctor advises you to do so.
Q: What is the cause of an esophagus hernia?
My wife is suffering from acid reflux because of a esophagus hernia. the doctor is suggesting an endoscopic surgery. Are there other options ?
A: Hereditary is one cause. She should go on a (ick) bland diet. Keep Pepcid AC or Tums around. Looking at it through an endoscope is going to find out where exactly the hernial is on the esophagus. Surgery on an esophageal hernia, in other words to fix it, can be very dangerous and is usually not recommended.
Q: What is the best OTC for acid reflux?
i have been having awful burning in my esophagus and tr to sleep in a reclining position, which helps but i’m only able to doze for a few hours…any help would greatly appreciated!
A: Digestive enzyme supplements work very well. Check to see if your acid reflux is not caused by the H Pylori bacteria however.

Q: Is this acid reflux or something else?
Lately I have had a strange sensation in my oesophagus,on my upper chest. It feels like a burning, well not a burning exactly just a funny feeling that hurts a little bit. It was worst yesterday and once when I burped a bit of barf came into my mouth! I get heartburn once in awhile but that’s usually in my abdomen. Is this acid reflux? Or something else?
A: Do you get this after drinking coffee? Never use to happen before and you drank gallons of the stuff, but lately after home made cup that is when it appears type of thing. Eating food will kill the burn, drinking water will kill the burn, eating spicy food will kill the burn.(true acid reflux is enhanced by eating spicy food, or more foods) yet I can kill the pain of mine by eating something, or more. It is not acid reflux either.
I was told “there is a little doorway(muscle flap) above the stomach that lets food in and then closes back up to stop the stomach acid from splashing up the esophagus-giving acid reflux. When you drink coffee, the muscle relaxes and the doorway is partly open, allowing acids to come up. Caffeine is the normal trigger. Cutting back on that may help. That means tea and hot chocolate too and coke n pepsi.
A sign of getting older or sitting around too much (or both).
Q: indigestion or acid reflux?
the gastreonologist says i have acid reflux. weird thing is i get a major amount of relief from mints .. and supposively mint is a big trigger for relfux. another thing is that i dont reflux in my esophagus much at all.. maybe 4 times a month.. and i feel mostly just bloated in my esophagus and a dry cough from time to time..
A: Hi element4,
Many of the symptoms you described, bloated feeling in esophagus, a dry cough, and reflux into the esophagus, are classic symptoms of acid reflux. My guess is they gave you an endoscopy to determine this. Many times you will experience the effects of acid reflux and not feel. This can be caused sometimes because of damage to the lining of the esophagus.
For this reason, I would take this diagnosis very seriously and at the very least begin taking either a prescription drug like Nexium or start using some home remedies. This would be a good start. In addition, it may pay to look at adjusting some lifestyle factors to help keep acid reflux in check. Just because it is not a significant problem now, does not mean that it will not get worse in the near future.
Here, are a few lifestyle factors to consider changing if they are relevant: reduce or stop smoking, reduce or stop drinking alcohol, eat your last meal 4 to 5 hours before bedtime, move from 3 meals to 4 or 5 smaller ones, consider adding blocks to your bed or using an elevated pillow to help improve your natural defenses against reflux. These are just a few things that can be done to help attack acid reflux. The good news here is that you can now do something about it. If you still have doubts about the diagnosis, feel free to get another diagnosis from another doctor. However, do not delay starting to get treatment so to prevent any further damage to your body.
Best,
Frank Miller
Q: Confused on Acid Reflux…Is it caused by too much acid in the stomach or not enough?
So, I’ve asked around on Yahoo Answers and also did some online research. I’m getting two answers for acid reflux (heartburn)…
one is there isn’t enough acid in the stomach, which doesn’t break down the food enough and it causes gas to release, because of food only partly breaking down and releasing gas, and with the gas, comes up the stomach acid to the esophagus.
The other reason I thought caused it was too much acid in the stomach. Which is why you should stay away from fatty food, citrus-type, etc. But I could be wrong.
So which is it? Too much acid or not enough?
A: Usually Acid Reflux (GERD) is caused by a faulty sphincter. The esophageal sphincter is a little muscular ring at the end of the esophagus and is designed to prevent stomach contents from “backing up”. Sometimes this sphincter becomes weak and stops functioning properly, allowing stomach acids to push up through the opening into the esophagus. In other cases, Acid Reflux (GERD) is caused by a hiatus hernia, where the stomach pokes through the diaphragm, preventing the esophagus from closing. There are also certain health conditions where a higher incidence of Acid Reflux (GERD) occurs, such as in those with asthma and diabetes.
