Q: Does Celexa make you gain weight or lose weight?
Currently, I binge eat and sleep little because of my depression/anxiety/OCD. Celexa is supposed to help, but I’m so afraid I will gain weight on this pill.
Is there any way to prevent it?

I have General anxiety disorder and Social anxiety disorder. I’ve never taken any anti-depressants before, but yesterday my doctor prescribed me Citalophram or whatever, which is Celexa.

He’s starting me on half a pill a day, which is 10mgs. Will I gain weight? I’ve read stories on here of people gaining 20-90 pounds, which is ridiculous. I’m scared of taking it because I don’t want to gain weight.

A: no way. not 20 to 90 lbs!!!
You can gain weight on any med, or ssri’s …
you can ALSO lose weight at well, depends on person, the anxiety will make you gain weight itself, just from the stress, so dont worry about it,i have several clients on celexa, none have gained weight.

I’m on 10 mg a day for my OCD… do you think I would gain much weight on Celexa? I don’t care if it’s only like three or four pounds, but would it make me gain more than that?

A: Among all the professional database that I looked into, very few listed weight gain as one of the side-effects of celexa. The few database that said weight gain, also said weight loss is possible. Celexa is one of the best anti-depressant that cause minimal or no weight gain.

ok use to take celexa a couple of years ago and it made me gain weight, 50lbs to be exact. I didn’t change the way i eat, so what makes you gain weight? I still need celexa BAD but i don’t want to gain weight, should i just exercise more?

A: It made me gain weight too. I stopped taking it. Exercising more might help, but I don’t know.

A: no, it wont. it’s because your appetite has changed. and you’re acting on it. I use to use celexa. I changed to symbolta too. which doesn’t have as great of side effects at all. Celexa has far to many.

my meds are making me gain weight. either celexa or depokote.

A: Most medicines for depression and bi-polar are metabolic and they will make you gain weight. There aren’t any meds for these conditions that do not cause this. I just went to the Dr today to try and get on something different ( I am on Lexa-pro and Abilify) and that is what he told me. You just have to watch your calorie intake and eat healthy and also get some exercise. Which all of these things without meds will make you feel better. I understand where you are coming from because I have gained over 20 lbs on my meds. Just be thankfull that you are getting the medication that you need to feel better and function in society. Q: Anyone experience weight loss or gain from takn celexa?
I take 20 mg citalopram(celexa) everyday n i actually at first thought i was gainin weight but i seen my doc after being on it for 2 weeks and i lost a few pounds, so i was just wondern if anyone else experiences weight loss or gain. I know everyone is different. Any replies would be greatly appreciated!

A: I have taken Celexa for 2 years lost loads of weight am now under weight and can’t put it back on so yes! It’s a common side effect the doc tells me (weight loss or gain) probably more to do with my anxiety tho, I reckon! E-mail me if you wanna chat about that particular drug. I take 40Mg’s a day!!

Q: has anyone stopped taking citalopram (celexa) for weight gain?
I have been on citalopram for 6 months and gained 20 pounds on the dang drug. It has increased my appetite and made me more lazy sort of. So I have lost my motivation to work out and be physically active. Well yesterday I went to the DR and she switched me to fluoxitine (prozac) and I want to know any people who have had any experiences with either one of these drugs and weight issues.

A: All selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors can increase the appetite to some degree. Some more than others.

i was prescribed celexa as an anti-depressant. my main cause of depression is my weight. i weigh 175 and 5′6”. i am willing to take it to a certain point. yet i do NOT want to gain weight. tell me your opinions and do you know any meds that cause you to lose weight?

A: if your doctor knows you are depressedm due to weight, then they wont prescribe you something that makes you gain weight.

there isnt anything that really safely makes you lose weight, and if so its not a good idea. i understand how you feel as i need to lose weight too but im sure there are no miracle pills.
i have heard that hoodia is quite good, am considering it but its quite expensive and not worth it if they dont work.

Q: Why am I experiencing weight gain since starting Celexa despite my reduced caloric intake due to loss of app?
I started taking Citralopram one week ago today and have experienced a reduced appetite, resulting in me only consuming about 700-800 calories per day. Despite this, I’ve gained about .5 to 1lb PER DAY steadily since I started. Am I retaining more water or something?

A: probably something to do with blood sugar.

i was put on 10 mg of lexapro by gastroentrologist for 4 months and it did not improve my mental health or irritable bowel syndrome.

The psychiatrist then said i should change to 20 mg of celexa for some time and later he would put me on 40 mg of celexa.

Will I gain weight? I did not gain any weight while using lexapro for 4 months. Also will the medication improve IBS?
chilady: I have Bentyl at home but don’t take it because on internet i read many bad things about it. But i admit Bentyl is great help for me.

I am 31 year old male. It is common for IBS patients to be put on SSRI’s.

A: can’t say. it depends from person to person. i was reading on internet where a man said he gained 70 lbs on celexa. I think he was just trying to find something to blame his weight gain on. I seriously doubt his story.

I have also read on internet many saying they gained no weight with celexa while some say they lost weight on lexapro.

If you eat right, exercise regularly u should not worry about weight gain. Antidepressants are required for IBS treatment.

Q: generic celexa (citalopram)..weight gain or loss?
So I was prescribed the generic celexa (it was cheaper). also called citalopram.
does anyone know if it makes you gain weight? or possibly lose? I am struggling with depression and anxiety, but I need to know this. I previously struggled with an eating disorder (I am really well recovered, I am just struggling with thoughts), and of course, weight gain is a huge concern of mine.
I’m not more concerned with that than my mental well being, I just really need to know if it does so I know whether to switch to a different med.

A: I’ve been on it for a while and haven’t gained any weight, But haven’t lost any either. I think it depends on the individual and definitely on their eating and exercise habits.
Try it, and if it seems to cause weight gain, talk to your dr about something else.

Q: weight gain from Celexa? (Lexapro)?
Did anyone gain weight using Celexa…Lexapro is similar to Celexa.
I’m 25 years old and never ever did I gain weight from anything. I used to weight 112 lbs being 5.2. Now about a year later I’m 125.

A: I take generic Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning, and Lexapro (10 mg) with dinner, for depression and anxiety. I’ve been taking that for over two years, and it’s working very well for me.

The Wellbutrin SR seems to help me to be more alert and active – and wanting to do things – while the Lexapro makes me more mellow, and it helps me sleep better, too. They are relatively low doses of each medication, which keeps side effects at a minimum. I really can’t tell I’m taking any medication at all.

The last time I was in the doctor office, I had lost 8 lbs – not a lot, but in the right direction. I give the Wellbutrin SR the credit for the weight loss, since it does help me to be more active.

You could probably add the Wellbutrin SR to your Celexa, and maybe drop your Celexa dose a little to make up for it. The Wellbutrin SR really does a lot to help “get me going”.

Q: I have just started taking celexa and want to know if it causes weight gain?
I know most the side effects but I would still like to know if anyone has expierenced dramatic weight gain.

A: i’ve been on it for just over a month now and have not experienced any significant weight gain. if you have, i would suggest you talk with your doctor. maybe there is another presc you could try.

I’ve been on it for two years and gained 17 pounds. Was 100 now 117. Is it Celexa or just me? What can I do about it?

A: Depression in general makes you gain weight, but I’m on celexa and have noticed the same trend. Actually, look at it positively! You can excersise to lose a few pounds, and exercise is great for helping with depression :)
