Q: Dietitians and Nutritionists?
I am considering the job of nutritionist or dietitian, but from what I’ve seen, they are all if not most, women. I’m not trying to be sexist or anything, but I wouldn’t want to be the only needle in a haystack.
Also, I’ve read up alot about Food Inspectors and would consider becoming one as well, but is there any education differences between a Food inspector and a dietitian? (University degrees, courses, etc..)
P.s: I live in Ontario Canada if that helps to narrow it down.
Thanks alot.
A: Well, being a man who is a dietitian would certainly get you more customers as there are people who do (subconsciously) prefer a man and I’m not being sexist or anything.
Food inspectors don’t have much room for flexibility. Very militant in what is regulated as the laws change.
Ontario is a nice place.
Q: im looking for Karyn Schnick?
lives in canada leduc and last in kelowna bc
is for profession dietist/nutritionist
A: try doing a google search, the phone books, professional associations, alumni fron her college
Q: How is this fair…? Why we need a universal healthcare plan ?
I believe that we need a universal health care type of system and here is why..
This is what happened to me last year. My company had a lapse in our premiums in 2005 that we didn’t know about… I had a congestive heart failure, they denied my claim, this is what I am being sued for…
emergency room 7500.00
Ambulance ride 850.00
Angioplasty 31,480.00
follow up Physical Therapy (6 months) 5400.00
Prescriptions and nutritionist 6100.00
Total 51000.00
would you choose this scenario?
In Canada it would have been free ?
also I can not get aid or assistance because I made too much…
and now there is no health insurer that will insure me.. so I am completely on my own.. no cardiologist nothing.
Further, my company had a round of lay offs in October, I had only been there 4 years they cut everyone with less than 5 years tenure.. I have to mortgage my house but me credit is trashed because of the HA…Get the picture?
This is what is good for America?
OMG… Cobra is only available if you are current we weren’t …PS this was an accounting error,
A: Please email me. I am in your situation too and may be able to help you with your options. Although I am not an expert by any stretch, we can compare situations and how it worked out for me. You don’t allow email so I couldn’t write to you privately.
Yes, we definitely need solutions to the health care crisis in our nation, especially for people such as us. Mandating coverage is of no help to people that have a hard enough time making ends meet as it is, without the added burden of unaffordabe health insurance premiums added into the mix. I am in the position of not being able to go back to work because of the financial burden my health costs would be without assistance. Most employers’ health insurance does not kick in full force for a few months to a year. For me, that is not an option I can even consider.
Q: Nutrition Sciences in University!?
I’m looking to get into a Nutrition Sciences for university. I’m not sure what university yet but I’m looking to stay in Ontario, Canada. Im just wondering what he prerequisites are for Nutrition sciences. (Im looking to become a dietitian or nutritionist)
Do I need Physics?
Just le me know what I need and that would be great!
A: The requirements depends on the university. But generally, you’ll need biology, chemistry, and possible math (advanced functions or calc). I don’t think physics is required. I know Guelph and Ryerson has nutrition programs. Maybe you could check the requirements on their websites.
Q: What is happening to our countries food !?
I live in southern Ontario Ca, and it is the most rich and beautiful part of Ontario for farmland, we have rich black soil and we grow crops from apples, peaches, potatoes and just about everything you need to eat healthy and nutritionist balanced meals.
I am not a farmer but I have enjoyed eating well at the corners fruit stands and have been able to feed the family with healthy low cost foods. This is all about to change now as the farmers can not compete against the free trade
Now I go to the farm stands and question them why they are leaving the fruits on the trees (peaches) bumper crop this year and delicious! product being left in the field just to name a few.
I go to another farmer and ask why his product is still in the fields to be pl owed under?
I watch on the news that these farmers can not complete with the free trade our government is imposing on us instead I am forced to go to grocery stores and buy smelly, flavourless outrages high cost produce and fruits that have travelled for weeks in the bottom of ships (which by the way is ruining our oceans and waters) when I get the product home, I find it is musty, rotten inside, and not fit to eat and has to be thrown out or taken back.
I am appalled at how the system works and I ask why are we allowing the governments to force us into something that is not only unhealthy, but costly and putting our farmers out of work and losing their farms.
Does this make any sense to anyone and why are we allowing this to happen right under our noses
I have nothing against free trade but let us be reasonable, why are we being forced to buy foods that are extremely costly and in poor value when we have the best right here in our own country?
Do we really need more black cement and pavement for parking lots instead of rich farmlands for crops? Are we really just fools being lead by the governments who’s only interest is greed of money?
Are we willing to sit back and just accept what they are throwing us What are the changes we need to take, how do we tell the government that we are canadians and we choose to eat what we grow and refuse to eat what they are stuffing down our throats. How can we change these outrages acts and demand that the government to be more supportive of the canadian farmer and businesses.
Who runs our governments anyhow and why do we sit back instead of banding together to support our own country.
Come on canadians, we need to stand up and take action in demanding that we have some say in what we wear, eat and drink!
I am happy to buy the things that we don’t have in our country, but I don’t understand why I need to buy and pay extra for to what I need to throw out, not to mention what makes us ill with all the preservatives to make the long trips.
It may cost a little more now to help support our farmers, but in the long run, we are eating fresh from the fields to the tables.
What is your take on this problem and how can we keep what is ours, ours?

Additional Details
thank you for the spelling correction, however, you totally missed my point. I am saying that our crops are not in our stores period. I would gladly pay extra to eat the foods grown in right here in Canada, but I would like that chance
I also do not need a lesson on how the food gets from China, Asia and so many of the other countries. I am also aware that free trade is good to some degree, but I am not sure that most people really know what is going on, I put the question out there for common-sense people to address the delemia and to become more aware, it is not an arguement that I am asking for, just give us the right to buy our products and keep what is good and working, working! The age old arguement of free trade will always be an on going thing, but again, why do we need to buy goods that are simply superior to what is sold on the shelves, perhaps you don’t care one way or another, however, I am sure that most common-sensed people once enlighted would surely opt to eat fresh!

ty all for ur answers, I received a lot of good answers, however I fear I may not have been as clear as I should have been. I am aware that some of us are forunate enought to grow our small gardens and even some who are not apartment and small home owner can not go to our local grocery stores and buy fresh oppose to buying from counties which transport inferior foods and cost so much more. I am happy to buy mangos and such that we do not produce here, yet I must buy fruits and vegetables that the farmers are not capable of shipping as per the high expense. I do not see the point in buying our own products from such as China which is laballed Canadian and needs to make the trip back home.
We as canadian, need to consider this outrages and consider our health important enough to demand that if we grow it here, lets sell it here. After that, we can sell our extras as export. I am sure the all would benifit, I no longer wish to buy
A: SAme in America my friend, I live in Florida “the Sunshine state” 2 miles from the beach.
The produce including citrus all comes from South America and the fish comes from Asia, it is all crap as well.
I would like to eat local and or organic however it is way out of my price range.
It breaks my heart, we don’t make anything or grow anything anymore and those were what made my country great.
Q: Friend overuses free health care?
I’m in Canada. Free health care. But my friend who moved here from pakistan is ALWAYS using our health care system for everything. she gets things done that I have never even heard of. she gets a massage about once a week at least, she goes to the dentist about every 2 or 3 months, she gets blood work done constantly, etc. all of this is paid for by the government or her employer. she doesn’t have any medical issues. maybe a couple of allergies.
anyway, today she went and got a CT scan done because she had like a sniffle or something. also, she gets complete full body physicals every couple of months. she’s only 25 or something. not to mention, she regularly consults a nutritionist, probably every 3 weeks. I could go on and on, but basically she uses every service possible to the MAX. she’s not even a citizen. we have to pay for everything with our tax dollars.
what are your thoughts?
A: I heard everybody in Canada has to wait in line for months to get health care. But you’re saying your friend (who also pays taxes) can walk into a clinic anytime and get a CT scan for a cold, and a complete physical and massage on demand whenever she wants? Now I don’t know what to believe.
Q: I don’t have a clue what career I want to go down?
I have no idea what I’d like to do as a career!
I am twenty years old living in the UK, hoping to move within the next few years to one of the British Commonwealth countries to live and work for a while with my American girlfriend (who is living in the USA as well atm).
I am currently studying music and just got my diploma in music performance. I am going on to do a foundation degree in it, starting September but am worried. I realised that there is very little in the music business I like, and the things I do like make very little money. The only sector in the music business I enjoy is the performance side of it, but even that I don’t enjoy that much. I am a very introverted person, and play music for enjoyment. When I am forced to do it just to make money it takes all of the fun out of what I am doing.
Putting that aside, I do not have any other clue what other field I could go into and study. I feel so lost and scared!
I know what I want in life. I just want to live with my girlfriend peacefuly, maybe a small family, caring for them, loving them…but everytime money gets added to the equation my life becomes turmoil, and Im not even living with my girlfriend yet! I know I have to work though. I also feel, we only have this life, and I don’t want to be one of the majority of adults who spend most of their lives working, just because they have to make money.
Sure, if there was something I really loved doing, then my life wouldn’t be being wasted, and I’d be earning the money to support my girlfriend and family at the same time, but at the moment I have no clue what this could be!
As I said, I have a music qualification. I do not want to teach music, although I wouldn’t mind teaching guitar to students as instrument specific tuition, but this can only make a part time income and if I plan to move in with my girlfriend, it will be very difficult to get students wherever we go, until we are settled down, preferably married.
I have juggled with the idea of hypnotherapy, as for years I have been interested in the mind and have studied hypnotherapy on my own means a bit. I tried psychology, and although the career may be rewarding, the years of study surely aren’t and I don’t really feel I want to go down that road.
If I did study hypnotherapy however, there is the there is once again the problem of getting clients. And if I moved to another country with my girlfriend, New Zealand, Canada etc…it will be very difficult finding clients, and until the business is well up and running, which could take years, I’d be stuck in small, badly paying, very depressing McDonald style jobs.
Other ideas I have juggled with hypnotherapy were, nutritionist, personal trainer, reiki practitioner, holistic store. All of which however take a lot of time to set up and get running, and are not very profitable.
I currently getting job seekers allowance (the dole) from the government as I have been unemployed for a few months due to two chronic auto immune diseases I have which prevented me from working. I only worked in small grocery stores so far though which brought me to the edge, where I actualy started to feel I was losing it with stress and depression, so I had to quit a few of them.
If I could go abroad and work, in a completely new setting; earn money, be given a place to live by my work whilst earning enough to both save and pay for food etc then I’d be tempted to give that a try for a month or two, but that once again doesn’t hold many long term career prospects, and is not somethign I’d do continuously.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

A: Follow your dreams, work hard (the best you can), and you’ll be good.
In the end, that is the most important thing, when you are old, and look back on your life, you will not say ‘oh I should have done this job, because I would have made more money or been more successful’. I guarantee it.
As they say, it is better to regret the things you HAVE done than the things you HAVEN’T done.
Q: How do you recover from a weekend of really poor eating (and overeating?)?
This weekend was Thanksgiving in Canada so i went to my parent’s house from Friday til today. My parents eat HORRIBLY.. they don’t even buy fresh food because no one eats it.. their idea of a healthy meal is something stuffed with 1/2 lb bacon and cheese, and 3 different desserts. Every meal is like this and they snack constantly.
I’m 20, so I bought my own groceries to bring home, but my mom said it was stupid and I could just eat what they eat so I got to bring very little of it – they live in a small town and I’m banned from the only grocery store there because I shoplifted when I was very young.
While I’m there I get food shoved under my nose because my parents don’t think I eat enough….. If they don’t plan a meal and I begin to make myself something healthy(ish) my mom quickly removes it and gives me something tasty but very unhealthy… and they don’t understand why they gain weight. They likely eat 4000-5000 calories a day with no activity… over 300 dollars of groceries a week.
ANYWAYS
I only go home 3 times a year so I basically said screw it and ate whatever I wanted while I was there. How do I recover from a weekend like this? My nutritionist (hat I no longer use) recommended 1900 calories for me a day… so for the next few days should I eat less and workout more to recover? Or just continue with my normal diet?
Even today when they brought me home, I had 1/2 cup rolled oats and 1/2 cup yogurt with a peach for breakfast… we went to wendys on the way for lunch and I had chicken strips with chili and diet cola.. at home I had a cup of green beans for a snack, then a bagel and 1/2 cup cereal for dinner (i have literally no fresh food in the house and it’s a holiday so nothing is open), so even today I ate pretty badly.
What should I do to recover from like 4 days of eating terribly?
A: Continue with your normal diet. Trying to deprive yourself usually ends up backfiring. Getting a bit more extra exercise wouldn’t hurt (except that it’s flipping cold – at least in Ontario!), but don’t do this out of punishment. Family events are very stressful especially when trying to eat healthier, and with a completely unsupportive family such as yours. If they can’t reach any compromises about allowing you to eat healthier while you’re there, then you may want to try to limit your time there – or make plans to have lunch with old friends while you’re back in your home town to get away from the bad food and have something healthy at least for one or two meals.
If you do see your nutritionist again, bring this up. They’re usually full of helpful coping ideas such as trying to offer to make a dish or dishes which might not be perfectly healthy but are a lot closer to healthy than what they normally eat (although my family sounds like yours and they typically reject change especially regarding food).
Q: Mental Health system in the U.S?
Ok I live in Canada so I dont need information on where to get help in the states cause I have my own doctors here and everything. But I do have a question that I was hoping some Americans can answer. I often see people on here asking questions on how they can get help for their mental illness without going to the doctor because they can’t afford it, dont have insurance etc… That bothers the hell out of me!! I mean isnt there a system in the U.S for mental health that gets people that help they need for free? I have a psychologist, psychiatrist, group therapy, nutritionist etc… all to help me with my mental illness(depression, OCD, GAD, SAD and panic disorder) and I dont pay a cent for any of it. Its all covered by health care.
I just find it so hard to believe that there arent free services like that offered in the U.S. someone please tell me that there is! I know there are mental health associations in the states just like there are over here…dont they provide free services? I’d appreciate any answers cause its just bothering me! Thanks
Edit: To aholes like here comes the sun….I don’t mean anything bad by it, like I’m not insulting the U.S or anything. And tax rates are just fine. its a small price to pay for everyones health. if anything people over here complain that we should have better health care.
Also thanks to those who answer my question respectfully!
No I haven’t tried gluten free yet! Thanks for the response
A: Some counties in the state do provide some mental health services, but its based on your income, and the waiting period to get in to see a councelor is months. And when you do get in to see someone, its in and out because there are so many people trying to get in. When you do see a county councelor, you are limited to 3-4 sessions. They try to set you up with a regular therapist, which unfortunately costs quite a bit of money.
I am lucky enough to have insurance. Very good insurance in fact. I get unlimited benefits at no cost to me. I think its ridiculous that insurance companies limit you to a certain amount of benefits a year. Some or most mental illnesses are just as or are more serious than other conditions. If I had a heart condition, would they only let me see my cardiologist 6 times a year? I find that the US healthcare system is ridiculous. My psychiatrist charges my ins company $190 for a 15 minute visit, and my outpatient therapist charges $320 for a 50 minute appointment. Its just horrible to think of all the people out there who really need help but can’t afford it. It makes me sick!!
