Q: Does Zoloft lead to excessive weight gain?
I have become reluctant when it comes to taking my medication, since I’ve been reading about Zoloft and everywhere I search, I find that people have been gaining a lot of weight due to antidepressants (ex: Zoloft). Does it really cause a drastic change in weight?

A: Everybody’s immune system is different so because people gain weight off Zoloft does not neccesarily mean you will. Several medications I tried people gained weight off of and told me I would but never did. I took Zoloft a while back but only for a week. My grandmother and aunt took it and gained quite a bit of weight.

Q: do more people lose or gain weight on zoloft?
I’ve been on zoloft a week and feel so bloated. I hate it! I also feel short of breath, anxious, shakey, agitated, and sometimes my heart races!

I read studies that say only about 1% Gain but there’s so much on the Internet about how people gain alot!

A: You’re probably having an allergic reaction. Call your doctor or pharmacist.

Q: Zoloft & weight gain…can’t take it off! Anyone else have this problem?
I have been taking 50 mg of Zoloft for 2 years. When I started I was a pretty healthy weight with diet & exercise. Now, I have gained 20 lbs. and CANNOT LOSE THE WEIGHT! I have been exercising like crazy & sticking to my diet…I haven’t shed a pound…I’m actually still gaining. I don’t recognize my body & am more depressed now than when I started the Zoloft for my depression! Any ideas or has this happened to anyone else?

A: Yeah, I gained 30lbs on it. It doesn’t make sense to take an anti-depressant that makes you fat, just to depress you even more! I have switched to celexa and have found that it is weight neutral. I did loose those extra pounds as well and I feel GREAT!

Q: is there a way NOT to gain weight with Zoloft?
ok so I have really bad anxiety and nothing can relieve it except my zoloft. Ihave tried not taking it, exercise, yoga. I have tried many things but as it turns out I have to take it. The first time around I gained 30 pounds, I have been taking it a week now and gained 10 more. Is there anyway I can lose weight while taking this medication? Anyway to not gain weight??

A: I only take my Zoloft during the school year (I’m a college kid and have horrible anxiety over all things academic) and it always makes me hungrier when I go back on it. I’m lucky in the sense that I have a fast metabolism and have never gained weight though. Is it making you hungrier/eat more? If it is, try to keep crunchy foods like carrots and low fat ranch dip, etc. around and snack on that.

Good luck!

Q: Does Zoloft cause weight gain?
I would like to hear from people who have actually used zoloft. My doctor prescribed zoloft for my OCD and i want to know if i should expect weight gain as a side effect. Thanks.

A: Yes I gained some weight. Around 6 lbs. I lost it after I got off it.

Q: what is a good anitdepressant that works as well as zoloft without the weight gain side effect?
ive been on wellbutrin it made me suicidal
been on effexor and it did nothing
been on lexapro , nothing
zoloft is the only thing that worked for my depression and anxiety but i have gained a lot of weight that wont come off w/ diet and exercise

A: I was on Zoloft too. I gained 50 lbs! I couldn’t understand why i would not eat a lot and exercise and was still overweight! went on Effexor and lost it all! Have you tried Wellbutrin? Have you spoken to you doctor. Maybe a combo of two antidepressants would work. I’m on Effexor and it works 4 me. Even better than Zoloft! Everyone is different.

Q: Question about zoloft & weight gain….?
Okay so I had a baby almost 8 months ago…I lost 20 pounds immediately after I had him & looked like I was on my way to getting back to normal. Then got a little of the postpartum depression fun & needed to get back on zoloft, not to mension getting back on birth control too. Needless to say, I gained back ALL MY WEIGHT I had lost!!!!!! Talk about depressing. I am taking myself right off of that crap & getting off the pill & going to Mirena. My question is, with slowing getting off of zoloft & changing to Mirena, will I lose weight? Or will I have to really work for it? I wonder if it will come off easily after getting off the meds. Anybody have any insight into this topic??? It’s very very depressing gaining back all the weight you had lost with a baby & I really want to lose it!!

A: Postpartum depression always work after child birth. And its looks difficult to back to Zoloft. If you are a working woman than you can back to Zoloft and if you are house wife than its give you a hard time to go back to fit.You have to full attention on your diet light exercise and some medicines as directed by your Doctor.

Q: How much weight did you gain taking Zoloft?
I have gained about 40 pounds since I started taking Zoloft and I can’t get rid of it. I have always been very active! I just want to compare and see how much weight other people have gained when taking zoloft/sertraline.

A: i never gained any weight on zoloft. maybe hunger is a side effect of the medicine that i didnt experience. is it possible that food is a way you cope with your anxiety or epression?

Q: How does zoloft differ from Wellbutrin. Besides weight gain with zoloft.?
My doc wants to switch me between zoloft to wellbutrin
Also how do you properly switch between both to avoid serious withdrawel. Thanks!

A: Depression can be caused by numerous neurotransmitter imbalances (Serotonin, Dopamine and Norepinephrine) and because physicians don’t test NT levels, which imbalance is causing your depression, they opt to pick the most popular medication first (SSRIs). However, if you look at the literature on what effects each of these NTs has and compare that to your particular depression features, you may be able to see which drug might be the most beneficial for you. They have been shown to be equally effective at treating depression in clinical trials, but wellbutrin seems to be better tolerated in that it doesn’t cause sexual dysfunction or weight gain. In fact, Wellbutrin often causes weight loss and in contraindicated for bulimia or anorexia.

Here is a list of some co-existing symptoms that might lead you to pick one drug over the other:

Obsessive and compulsive (OCD), aggression, anger, depression related to event , loss of appetite –> SSRI

Irritable bowel syndrome, addiction (smoking, food or drugs), obesity, ADHD, profound anti-social behaviors, loss of sexual pleasure or drive –> Wellbutrin

Q: zoloft? Weight loss or weight gain? If so how much?
When taking zoloft, would it make me loose weight or gain, as well as helping me with my depression and panic attacks?

A: Zoloft effects some people one way and some another. I do not think there is an answer unless you yourself try it.

Q: zoloft and weight gain? In Janurary I switched from effexor xr to zoloft?
I had taken Zoloft before with no side effects. Since January I have gone from 165 to 180..last week I decided to stop taking the zoloft and the Premarin I have been taking since my hysterectomy almost 2 years ago. I weighted 158 at the time of surgery now 180, I thought I was overweight then..this is getting out of hand. Im interested in answers from people who stopped taking zoloft and or their HRT and their experiences.

A: I’ve been taking zoloft for a while now. and i actually have noticed some weight gain. i was about 145 pounds, and i remember in like 2 weeks i went up to 170. i was so shocked. so, taking zoloft might have possibilities of gaining weight.

Q: Has anyone experienced weight gain from taking Zoloft?
I’ve taken Lexapro in the past and it made me gain an enormous amount of weight, I’ve also tried Wellbutrin and I didn’t have any issues with weight gain. I’m now about to try Zoloft and want to know if anyone has had any weight gain issues with this drug?

A: I’ve been taking it for a few years now and I’ve gained weight but that was due to the pill via injection, eating crap, other factors and not exercising enough. Every antidepressant is going to work differently with your system but hopefully there should be a info paper with the box you get them explaining all the potential side effects. The main way you’re going to know since these drugs effect people differently is to actually take them and see what happens. Just be careful if you do take them, the decision is yours.

Q: Weight gain on Zoloft and Zovia?
I began taking Zoloft last year a few months earlier began to take the birth control pill Zovia. Since i began them, i have steadily gained weight. I’ve gained about 40 pounds. I began eating healthy and cutting out junk food and exercising 5 days a week after i gained 20 pounds, but i’ve still gained 20 pounds!

Has anyone else experienced this on either of these meds? The zoloft website says it shouldn’t cause weight gain, but i don’t really buy that.

A: I’m on Zoloft and I don’t gain weight. It’s probably the birth control alone or possibly the combination. You should always talk with your doctor about combining two medicines, some might not match.

Q: Prozac vs Zoloft and Weight gain?
Has anyone experienced weight gain or weight loss on either prozac or zoloft?

A: Mild weight gain is a frequent side effect of SSRI antidepressants. It is usually managable by reducing calories consumed daily, and other standard means of managing weight. For whatever reason, there are some people who get this side effect particularly bad and may benefit from switching to drugs like Effexor, Wellbutrin and Cymbalta, which either do not cause weight gain or have a much lower likelihood of it.

All of the SSRI family(Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, Lexapro, Luvox, Paxil) are about equal in their likelihood of causing weight gain. Your milage may vary significantly, some people who gain weight on one drug may not on another related drug.

Q: Does Zoloft make you gain weight?
I’ve recently been put on Zoloft, and i was wondering..does it make you gain or lose weight? I’m 15 years old…

I’ve actually felt like I have lost my appetite lately. I don’t know if that has anything to do with it.

If it makes you gain weight… why does it do that?

A: The medication causes your mood and motivation to lift, thus you will eat and that is why ppl gain weight.
Is very effective anti depressant.
